1, Do you offer a design consultation service?

Yes, we have an in-house sales team and showroom, however, it is important that you have an idea of the type of stairs and design you are trying to achieve. We recommend a good starting point is our models.

2, Do you offer site visits?

Once an order has been agreed, we will come to the site to do a full measure prior to manufacture.

3, Do I have to provide measurements with my initial inquiry?

No, but it is essential for our design team to see any plans, drawings and photographs.

4, Are your staircases preassembled, or made to order?

All our staircases are completely bespoke. We can create anything to order.

5, Do you have a showroom?

Yes, our onsite showroom allows you to view the variety and range of designs and materials available.

6, I don’t have plans yet, should I be looking for a staircase?

The ideal time to come in and plan your staircase is 15 weeks before installation, however, we appreciate that budgets sometimes have to be considered in advance, so we can work with you to give you an indication of what we may be able to achieve.

7, Can my Architect design my staircase?

Yes, they can, we can work off a visual drawing from an architect.

8, Who at Cornwall Stairs designs my staircase?

We have an experienced in-house design team that will work with you.

9, Can you fit lighting into a staircase?

Yes, but you will need a qualified electrician to complete the job.

10, How much space do I need?

We will design a staircase to fit your available space, subject to building regulations. Keep reading for more information about these regulations.


Building Regulations


1, Does my staircase need to comply with building regulations?

If you are replacing an existing set of stairs, then the new stairs need to be equal or better. All newbuild stairs need to conform to building regulations. These two links will take you to the relevant sections of the building regulations which apply to staircases. Our team knows the regulations inside out, so will be able to ensure that your staircase will comply.



2, What are the limitations for the rise, going and width?

There are set specifications within the building regulations for these measurements. Please see the documents above, or contact building regulations if you would like more information.

3, Is there a minimum head height requirement?

You need a minimum of 2m above the pitch line on a domestic staircase to comply with building regulations. (Loft conversations and renovations can vary).


Materials & Manufacture


1, What types of materials do you use?

We work predominantly an extensive range of hard and softwood, with added glass and metal components when required.

2, Who manufactures the stairs?

All of our stairs are manufactured in our own state of the art onsite workshop, using the latest technology and CNC machines.

3, What are the advantages of using Cornwall Stairs over a mass-produced staircase?

All of our staircases are made to measure so fit perfectly into your home. They are all designed by our in-house team to your requirements, meaning you get a staircase to your specification. All of our staircases are manufactured by our team of joiners and craftsmen using quality materials the latest technology is hand-assembled onsite, resulting in a quicker installation. All of this combined means you have peace of mind that your staircase will be fit for your needs and be long lasting.

Delivery & Installation


1, How will my staircase be delivered?

Within Cornwall, we have our own delivery team.

2, Do you offer a Fitting Service?

Yes, our team of highly experienced fitters can install your staircase for you. They have vast experience fitting stairs resulting in a quicker and easier process.

3, How hard is it to fit a staircase?

All of our stairs are manufactured to your requirements and come preassembled. Most tradespeople will be capable of fitting our stairs, and a basic set of stairs could be taken on by an experienced DIY-er, but we will not accept any liability. For full peace of mind, we recommend our fitting service.

4, At what stage should I have my staircase fitted?

This can vary greatly. We advise premium stairs (predominantly all wood) that these be fitted as late as possible once all building work has been completed, to minimize damage from site traffic.

5, Are your stairs delivered flat packed or ready assembled?

All our stairs are preassembled, however, we can supply flat packed if requested.

6, I’m outside of Cornwall. Will you still sell me a staircase?

Yes, on a supply-only basis. There may also be an additional cost for a site survey.

7, Do you decorate the stairs?

We currently do not have the facilities to paint or varnish your stairs, all stairs arrive bare wood, ready for you or your decorator to finish.

8, How much does installation cost?

We charge installation at £350 per day plus VAT.




1, How much does a staircase cost?

We can make basic stairs to fit most briefs and budgets. Our stairs vary from premium to regular, spiral to straight and walnut and glass to pine and MDF. Our sales team can give you an indication of costs during the initial consultation. Once the site survey has been completed and the 3D images approved then the design is finalised then the price can be confirmed.

2, Do we do stair refurbishments?

Yes. We can give your old staircase a complete makeover.

3, Do you offer a budget range?

Yes, our Budget stairs can start from as little as £300 which would be basic materials with mules, handrails and flights on a basic staircase. These can be tweaked and added to add extra quality.

4, How long will the whole process take?

This can vary based on your project requirements and the availability of our manufacturing and installation teams. We recommend you book a fitting/delivery slot. Once this is booked, this date is reserved, and we will manage the design and manufacture around this target date.

5, Can you make a staircase for my listed property?

We can match any style and period feature, and work within the compliance framework.

6, On a newbuild property can I do zero rated vat?

If we fit the stairs, then we will charge zero vat on newbuilds. If we just supply the stairs, then Vat will be charged, and then will have to be claimed back.
